Ultimas Noticias revealed today that Brigadier General Aquiles Lapadula has been formally charged with drug trafficking, according to a court document to which the website had access.
According to the website, the document alleges that Lapadula abused his position as head of the Zulia region (ZODI) for personal gain through illicit means. The document states:
[LApadula’s position] granted him the access and the control in the state [Zulia] to carry out illicit activities…
Lapadula is suspected of having facilitated the smuggling of 33,440 liters of sulfuric acid–which is used in cocaine production–into the country.
Lapadula was the ranking army officer in Zulia state until September 10 of this year.The investigation into his criminal activities began in April 2018.
