A sustained gun battle erupted in the Cota 905 neighbourhood of Caracas this afternoon between officers with the Cuerpo de Investigaciones Científicas, Penales y Criminlísticas (CICPC) and the members of a gang that operates in the area. The exchange–some of which was captured on video–left four officers injured, and ended only when the police retreated from the area.
The CICPC is the police body in charge of forensic and crime scene investigations.
According to El Nacional, the firefight began at approximately 8:00 AM this morning, and grew to involve approximately 200 heavily-armed officers, including soldiers with the National Guard. Meanwhile, El Universal reported that the gang elements that the authorities were fighting were equipped with “assault rifles and grenades”, and that the firefight took place in the Las Quintas area of the Cota 905.
El Nacional is also reporting that the police forces were ordered to retreat from the area via a direct order from Minister of the Interior, Justice and Peace Nestor Reverol.
