El Heraldo de Mexico published an article today in which it reveals that asylum requests by Venezuelans jumped 6,991% between 2015 and 2017, from 57 to 4,042, respectively.
According to the figures–which come from the Mexican government–Venezuelans have taken the second spot in asylum requests in Mexico, behind Honduras.
Citing official figures, the publication also reports that the number of Venezuelan asylum requests this year is on track to break last year’s record. On average, 207 Venezuelans have request asylum in Mexico this year every two weeks, while in 2017 that average was 168.41.
The Mexican government’s figures also show that Venezuelan asylum requests tend to be successful, as opposed to the average. In 2016, only 13% of asylum requests in Mexico from all countries except Venezuela were successful, while 94% of Venezuelan asylum requests were.
