Daniel Ceballos, the jailed former mayor of San Cristobal, Tachira, ended his hunger strike earlier today.

His wife, Patricia de Ceballos, made the announcement through her Twitter account:

I received a call from my husband Daniel Ceballos, he told me that he decided today to end his hunger strike, they have already given him an IV.

Patricia also said that Daniel asked her to bring him some soup next time she visits him.

The national coordinator of the Voluntad Popular party, Freddy Guevara, said that while Leopoldo Lopez was aware of Cabellos’ decision, he would continue his hunger strike.

The Mesa de la Unidad Democratica , the country’s largest opposition bloc, announced its support for Ceballos’ decision through a press release. The head of the bloc, Jesus Torrealba, told reporters:

We support Daniel’s decision, considering the fact that it means his survival. which in turn means that in future struggles (…) he will be able to play the distinguished role given to him by the people of Tachira.

Torrealba also the almost certain end to Lopez’s hunger strike, saying that the MUD supported both his continued commitment to the protest as well as his future decision to end the hunger strike “whenever he takes it”.

Saab: Ceballos to be Transferred Again

Tarek William Saab, the People’s Defender, announced today through Twitter that Daniel Ceballos would be transferred to a prison “in Caracas”, although he did not say exactly where. Ceballos is currently in a prison in Guarico state, having been moved there from the Ramo Verde military prison near Caracas on 23 May.

Saab said that the move had been agreed to “after several days of negotiation” between Ceballos and government officials, although it’s not clear if the move is a result of Ceballos ending his hunger strike.

Suspect in Adriana Urquiola Case Arrested in Colombia

Interpol officers arrested Yonny Bolivar today in Colombia, more than a year after he fired on a crowd of protesters in Los Nuevos Teques, Miranda state on March 24 of last year. A bystander by the name of Adriana Urquiola was killed during the shooting.

Shortly after Urquiola’s death, Bolivar spoke to El Nacional and admitted to firing on the crowd, but that his intention had not been “to kill anyone”.

Bolivar had been living in an upscale neighbourhood of Barranquilla under an assumed identity.
