National Assembly deputy Diosdado Cabello called on the Venezuelan people to ignore legislature’s rejection of the economy emergency decree yesterday, saying that the true power lay in their hands. Speaking at an event in Monagas state earlier today, Cabello said:
The people must understand that this [rejection of the decree] is just the opinion of a legislative body, but that the people are the ones who have the power (…) Can they [the opposition] tell the world that they don’t approve the decree without any reason? Can they? Are we, the government and the people obliged to comply with that? Truthfully, no, and much less so if we are a rebellious people!
Cabello also suggested that all of the National Assembly’s decisions were tainted, since he believes that the 107 opposition deputies are in the pockets of “North American imperialism [and] against the people’s sovereignty”.
Calling anyone who opposed the economic emergency decree “bad people”, and wondered why the opposition did not want to “help the people”.
Cabello also called on the Venezuelan people o give Maduro the power to “make the decisions he has to make”, and again reiterated that the Venezuelan state has no obligation to cooperate with the National Assembly.
Allup: Gov’t is in “Terminal” Stages
National Assembly President Henry Ramos Allup cranked up the rhetoric against the Maduro government today, saying that it was in its “terminal” stages. Allup also said that the country would not be able to recover as long as the PSUV was in power:
This government will not solve anything, and while it’s there all of the country’s problems will get fatally worse. Until we get out of this government democratically, Venezuela will not recover. It won’t be able to solve any of its problems.
Allup made the comments at an event in Plaza Brion in Chacaito, Caracas, where he also called on Venezuelans to continue to “resist” since the PSUV’s days are numbered:
We must never forget the worse “resistance”. We must resist (…) [this is a struggle] against a government that is in agony, in its terminal stage, and that still does not admit what we all know perfectly well: that it is at the end of 17 years of ignominy and disgrace…
Allup also called on Venezuelans to continue to have trust in the opposition:
We will not defraud you. Sometimes they will force us to take a step back or a step sideways, but you must understand that those are the kinds of retreats that strategists allow themselves so that they may win a battle decisively.
Venezuela Fails to Make Payment, Loses UN Vote
Yesterday, Venezuela became one of 15 countries to lose their right to vote at the United Nations General Assembly after failing to pay their annual contribution to the organization. The other 15 countries that were unable to pay their dues include Comoros, Guinea-Bissau, Yemen and Somalia.
Venezuela owes the United Nation “just under $3 million”.
Venezuela is also currently a member of the Security Council, and the fact that it is in arrears does not affect its right to vote there.
